Warre's

Warre & Co. Ltd.

Founded in 1670, Warre & Co. is the oldest and one of the most highly esteemed port shipping firms in the world. William Warre joined as partner in 1729, and the company became known as Warre. The Warre family worked in the wine trade at Oporto for over 200 years. Sir William Warre, grandson of the Warre dynasty’s founder, distinguished himself as a lieutenant general under the Duke of Wellington, defending Portugal against Napoleon’s invasion. The vast lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia, where ports are still aged and stored, were built in 1890 by George Warre, a nephew of Sir William. Andrew James Symington, great-grandfather of the current managing director of Warre’s, sailed to Portugal in 1863. After establishing himself as a well–known merchant in the port trade, he became associated with Warre’s in 1905. In 1912 the Warre family chose to return to England where they would look after sales, while the Symingtons managed operations in Portugal. Today James Symington is the director of Warre & Co. Ltd.

There are two fundamental styles of Port:
Port matured in wood and Port matured in bottle.

Wood Port
…is only bottled when ready for drinking and should be consumed within 18 months to two years after bottling. These Ports also retain their freshness for several weeks after being opened and need no decanting.
Vintage Port
…is matured in bottle after two years in cask (without any filtration whatsoever) and needs at least 10 to 15 years before beginning to reach maturity.

Warre’s Warrior Port

Warrior is the oldest mark of Port in the world, having been shipped continuously since the 1750’s. The name Warrior was branded on the casks of Warre’s finest Reserve Ports since the earliest days of the firm. The traditional style has been maintained over the years and today is a classic full–bodied wine with wonderful richness and balance.

Tasting Notes: Opaque with rich, bright, ruby rim. Loads of seductive ripe red berry aromas along with sweet, deep red rose perfume. On the palate a complex, rich full mouth releases flavors of cherry, plum and mulberry with a touch of vanilla. Mellow and smooth across the palate yet with an excellent structure and good spirity lift in the finish. Fairly full body yet with great balance of fruit, acid, sweetness, and alcohol. Delightful… drink now.

Warre’s Late Bottled Vintage Port

Warre’s is alone in maintaining a small production of bottle matured Late Bottled Vintage Port. Warre’s Late Bottled Vintage comes exclusively from prime quality vineyards whose finest wines will, in exceptional years, make up Warre’s renowned Vintage Ports. Primarily Quinta da Cavadinha and surrounding vineyards that have supplied the company uninterruptedly for generations, on the basis of close bonds nurtured over the centuries. Warre’s LBV was aged in seasoned oak casks over a period of four years after the vintage date after which it was bottled unfiltered and un-fined.

Tasting Notes: Deep, rich ruby color. On the nose bursting with lovely black fruit combined with a spicy complexity. Warre’s 2000 LBV has a palate of underlying richness and intensity with well rounded blackberry fruit and wonderfully structured tannins which lead to a long and lingering finish.

Warre’s Otima Tawny Ports

The aged 10–year–old Otima Tawny Port has a light delicate palate, challenging the perception of Port as a dark and full–bodied after dinner drink. A partner to the hugely successful Otima 10 Year Old is the new Otima 20, a fine blend of 20 year old Tawny Port. Neither need decanting; they are ready to drink when bottled and will maintain their quality in bottle. Serve slightly chilled or at room temperature. Superb with cheese, nuts or dried fruit after a meal or on their own.

10 Year Tasting Notes: Rich tawny color, with an excellent nose of nuts and hints of mature fruit. On the palate light and delicate, beautifully rounded, with hints of dried fruits, and a long elegant finish.

20 Year Tasting Notes: The translucent copper colored tone of the wine is matched by the beautiful soft nutty aromas gained by a full twenty years ageing in seasoned oak casks. Otima 20 Years is rich and delicate, but never cloying; the tannins and acidity ensure balance and perfect length.
